The Scouts, led by leaders Jim, Ralph and Helen, yesterday completed the challenging Dragon’s Back circular hike in the Brecon Beacons.
The 13.1km route took us to the summit of Waun Fach, the third highest peak in the Brecon Beacons (only ~10m off the highest Pen-y-Fan), with 670 metres of ascent along the way – that’s more than the height of two Eiffel Towers of climbing, or about 190 flights of stairs! Conditions were far from easy: squally showers and gusty winds of 40–45km/h made for a truly demanding day on the hills, but the leaders are pleased to report that every single scout made it to the top and back, and spirits remained high.

What made the achievement even more impressive was the mix of experience in the group. Alongside our more senior scouts were some of our newest members, just recently come up from cubs and experiencing mountain terrain of this kind for the first time. For them, the day was about far more than mileage and navigation skills — it was about conquering fears, discovering what they’re capable of and enjoying the outdoors. They were helped by impressive teamwork. The senior Scouts stepped forward and encouraged when it was needed.
This hike was great preparation for some of the climbs we are expecting at KIX in the summer, and of course the best bit is that it will count towards plenty of Scout badges!
